Violin Literature – “The Neglected Masterpieces
The influence of the older masters on present day interpretation - Jenő Hubay & Henri Vieuxtemps

Henri Viuextemps (1820-1881)

Henry Vieuxtemps was a Belgian composer and violinist. Born in Verviers in 1820 became the most prominent exponent of the Franco-Belgian violin school. His first public appearance was at the age of six when he played a concerto by Pierre Rode. Years later in Brussels, was introduced to Charles Auguste de Bériot who became also his teacher. A tour in Germany, in 1833, brought friendship with Louise Spohr and with Robert Schuman who compared the boy to Niccolo Paganini. More tours and fame followed, and at his London debut, in 1834 he met the great Italian virtuoso: Niccolo Paganini. Vieuxtemps wanted to be a composer too and for this reason he spent the winter 1835-1836 studying composition with Anton Reicha in Paris. His first violin concerto was a great success and brought him great fame. Vieuxtemps continued to compose and perform throughout Europe and the United States. He was especially impressed by Russia where he settled from 1846 to 1851. It was there that he founded the violin school of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory overseeing the formation of the “Russian school” of violinists. In 1871 went back to his country and was appointed professor at the Brussels Conservatory where his most famous pupil was: Eugène Ysaÿe. Some of his other notable students include Enrique Fernández Arbós, Eduard Caudella, Alfred De Sève, Sam Franko, Émile Sauret, Simon Sechter, and César Thomson. A paralytic stroke forced him back to Paris and consequently Henryk Wieniawski took over his classes. In 1879 a second stroke ended his career permanently. It was by then that he started to compose more, and for different instruments. Vieuxtemps is mostly known nowadays because of his seven violin concertos of which the 7th he dedicated to his dear friend Jeno Hubay. Vieuxtemps spent his last years in a sanatorium in Mustapha (an ancient municipality of Algiers) with his wife and daughter while continuing to compose. The period in Algiers is the one that interests our essay the most, as it was then, in 1881, that Hubay visited him and spent few months there studying and discussing with him Viuxtemps works. It was in Algiers that Vieuxtemps honored Hubay with the dedication to him of his 7th violin concerto. It was also then, sadly, in 1881, that Vieuxtemps died near his beloved friend Jeno Hubay.
